We have the sad news that Bernard Jacobs, FASLA, has passed away. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and had worked with him.
The firm of Jacobs /Ryan Associates is being reorganized as JRA Landscape Architecture PLLC, as Terry Warriner Ryan, FASLA, continues the traditions and quality of design service into the future.

We are excited to be working for Union Square Condominiums on the revitalization of their courtyard. The rendering above illustrates how dynamic paving will enhance the views from the surrounding high-rise residences, while strategically placed benches encourage social interaction. New plantings of Gingko, Redbud and shade-loving perennials will bring nature into the space, creating a welcoming environment for all.
Building Technology Consultants Inc. is providing architectural and structural engineering services, while Preservation Services Inc. serves as the General Contractor. Intrinsic Landscaping Inc. is responsible for the installation of the paving, planters, and planting. We look forward to the completion of this project this Spring.

The University of Chicago Crerar Science Quadrangle was designed in collaboration with the University’s planner Richard Bumstead, FASLA, to feature a custom lighting element. The lighting structure suspends two concentric circles of continuous LED fixtures from four posts with catenary cables. This “double circle of light” creates a focal point above a new plaza with pavers, a surrounding circle of trees, a circular plant bed, custom stone benches, various walkways with new lighting and two side mixed border gardens. Rubinos and Mesia provided civil and structural engineering; Primera, electrical engineering; Maglin, manufacturing and support engineering; and Atrium was the installing contractor. The project was the subject of an article in Landscape Architecture Magazine, January 2019, and has garnered these awards:
- 2019 American Architecture Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
- Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), Chicago Section 2019 Merit Award.
- Illinois Chapter, American Society of Landscape Architecture (ILASLA) 2019 Merit Award for Design.

Jacobs/ Ryan Associates recently provided Landscape Architectural services for Rivers Casino Portsmouth, the first casino in Virginia. The 45-acre site is located in the Tidewater area of Virginia, just off the Interstate between Portsmouth and Norfolk, home to many Military facilities and recreational areas. Jacobs/ Ryan Associates envisioned an eye-catching casino with a large event lawn surrounded by a lake. The event space has a promenade and formal ring of RedPointe Maple under planted with a carpet of Juniper. The circular promenade embraces the depressed turfgrass and a stage for concerts and events while a steakhouse restaurant patio bar and lounge overlook the event lawn.

Jacobs/Ryan Associates celebrated with Ross Barney Architects at the award for the 2019 AIA Chicago Divine Detail Award for the Stramp at the River Theater portion of the Chicago Riverwalk. This award brought the total number of awards for the Riverwalk up to twentytwo. |

The Chicago Botanic Garden’s award-winning Regenstein Learning Campus encourages outdoor nature play and includes other such elements as a large, shallow water feature, boulders to climb on and logs to crawl through. Notice the bright spring bloom of the Redbud trees in the background of the video. The garden displays various showy plants to enliven the experience of the garden during all times of the year. |
